What is Sexual Abuse?

Sexual abuse refers to any non-consensual sexual act or behavior that forces, manipulates, or coerces someone into engaging in sexual activity without their consent.

Common Symptoms & Experience

Common Symptoms

ADHD symptoms can vary by age and individual, but they generally fall into three main categories: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

Emotional & Psychological Distress

  • Survivors may experience intense feelings of shame, guilt, anger, anxiety, or depression. They may have difficulty trusting others and often feel isolated or numb. The emotional weight of the trauma can also lead to low self-esteem or a distorted sense of self-worth.

Physical Symptoms & Health Issues

  • Victims may experience physical pain, such as headaches, stomach problems, or unexplained aches. They may also struggle with sleep disturbances (nightmares, insomnia) or panic attacks. Sexual dysfunction or avoiding physical touch are also common reactions.

Behavioral Changes

  • Survivors may withdraw from social interactions, engage in self-destructive behaviors (such as substance abuse or self-harm), or have difficulty maintaining relationships. Some may avoid places, people, or situations that remind them of the trauma, which can severely impact daily functioning.

Experiences

Survivors of sexual abuse often go through a range of profound and distressing experiences. These experiences can vary based on the nature of the abuse, the individual, and their circumstances. Here are three common experiences of sexual abuse:

Feelings of Powerlessness and Helplessness

  • Survivors of sexual abuse often feel overwhelmed by powerlessness, especially if the abuse occurred when they were younger or in situations where they couldn't escape or protect themselves. These feelings may persist, leading to a sense of being out of control in other areas of their lives.

Flashbacks or Intrusive Memories

  • Many individuals with a history of sexual abuse experience flashbacks or intrusive thoughts that make them feel as though the traumatic event is happening again. These memories can be triggered by specific sounds, smells, or situations that remind the individual of the abuse. This experience can be emotionally overwhelming and disorienting.

Struggles with Trust and Relationships

  • Survivors of sexual abuse may find it difficult to trust others, especially in intimate relationships. They may avoid closeness, feel detached from others, or have trouble feeling safe around people. The trauma can create barriers to forming or maintaining healthy connections, leading to isolation and loneliness.

How Psychological Therapy Can Help You

sychological therapy provides essential support for survivors of sexual abuse, helping them process trauma, regain control, and rebuild their emotional well-being. Here are three common ways therapy can help:

Trauma Processing and Emotional Healing

  • Therapy, particularly Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), helps survivors process and reframe traumatic memories in a safe and controlled environment. This reduces the emotional distress associated with past abuse and allows for healing.

  • Many survivors struggle with guilt, shame, or self-blame. Therapy helps individuals recognize that the abuse was not their fault and empowers them to rebuild self-esteem, establish boundaries, and develop a positive sense of self.

Restoring Self-Worth and Empowerment

Improving Trust and Relationships

  • Survivors often experience difficulties in relationships due to fear, mistrust, or emotional detachment. Therapy helps individuals develop healthy coping mechanisms, rebuild trust in themselves and others, and foster safe, supportive relationships moving forward.
