Imagine you're a farmer. Maybe you grow pineapples, raise cattle, or cultivate mangoes. One day, you discover a pest that threatens your crops or animals. Wouldn't you invest time, effort, and money into preventing it from destroying your harvest
Of course! Ensuring a healthy yield requires actively defending against threats.
Now, imagine you're an athlete preparing for a big event—a marathon, a rugby match, or a football game. To perform at your best, you must take care of your body. You need quality sleep, proper nutrition, and hydration. You’d do whatever it takes to eliminate anything that could hinder your performance. Arming Yourself Against Your Thoughts

For the farmer, the goal is an abundant harvest. For the athlete, it’s peak performance. But what about us? What is our fundamental goal?
At a basic level, we could say that our goal is to live well. But just as farmers protect their crops and athletes protect their bodies, we must also defend ourselves against the things that can sabotage our well-being.
The Invisible Enemy: Our Own Minds
Living well often means acting in alignment with our values and aspirations. But what’s one of the biggest obstacles to this? Our own thoughts.
Think about it.
Many of us know what we should be doing; exercising more, being more patient, eating healthily, setting boundaries. But awareness alone doesn’t lead to behavior change. Just because we know something is good for us doesn’t mean we follow through.
Why? Because there’s a force that pulls us away from our best intentions. This same force also pushes us toward things we don’t want to do.
Imagine waking up with a plan to exercise.
The alarm goes off, and suddenly, your mind whispers: It’s too early. It’s raining. You had a long week—just start next Monday. Before you know it, you're pressing snooze and rolling back under the covers.
Our thoughts act like a backseat driver, constantly giving directions. But here’s the thing—just because they speak doesn’t mean we have to obey.
ARRM Yourself: Arming Yourself Against Your Thoughts
If we want to live better, we must recognize and counteract the mental patterns that sabotage our goals. One way to do this is by using the ARRM method:
Awareness – Notice what your mind is saying when you start to resist taking positive action.
Remember – Remind yourself of your values and why your goal matters.
Resolve – Decide in advance that you won’t let your thoughts dictate your behavior.
Move – Take action, even when your mind tells you not to.
Before we dive deeper into these strategies in the coming posts,
I invite you to start observing your mind. Pay attention to your daily behaviors.
Are they moving you toward your values or away from them?
When you find yourself procrastinating or avoiding something beneficial, pause and listen.
What is your mind saying?
Awareness is the first step in taking control of your actions. The more you notice, the better prepared you'll be to challenge the mental habits that hold you back.
Looking forward to catching up next time. Until then, take note, stay mindful, and keep moving forward.
